When you visit Dr. Kalasho for your first appointment, she will perform a 3D digital scanning of each of your teeth. It is painless and non-invasive. She will use a small tool to go over each of your teeth, creating a 3D image of all sides of each tooth. You will no longer need to have impressions taken and trays put in your mouth. Another benefit to digital imaging is it is far less intrusive than a traditional x-ray.

Mail-in aligners are certainly more convenient than making an appointment with your dentist, and at times, could ultimately be cheaper; however, at TruGLO, we sincerely believe that mail-order aligners are incredibly dangerous to our patients. 

When teeth are moved, they move within your jaw, and no part of your body should be moved without the direct supervision of a doctor. Consumers of many of these mail-in aligner companies never have the opportunity to consult with a licensed professional or even have one supervising their case.

The potential for major issues begins when the mail-in aligner kit arrives, creating the risk of a large margin of error. Consumers are expected to take photos of their smiles with a basic camera app and send the company impressions they take themselves.

Some companies may have you come in for a digital scan taken by an employee with no dental background and no dentist on-site.

Neither of these options has a dentist examining your teeth before putting you in aligners. This poses the risk of exacerbating cavities and gum disease. This is not what a dentist or orthodontist would do.

A dental professional would examine your X-rays to make sure there is no active decay or periodontal disease prior to any treatment. They would look at the skeletal anatomy of your face, as well as the anatomy of the teeth, in order to determine the mechanism of your unique tooth movement.

You will also notice that mail-in aligners have a lot of consent requirements protecting the company from their customers coming after them for poor results. This is because it happens, a lot. We have had a good number of patients come to us who had to undergo corrective orthodontics in order to fix the damage caused by mail-in aligners. Many of these patients developed overbites, underbites, and crossbites due to the misalignment of their teeth and poor fittings created by these mail-ins.

Moving teeth is not as simple as it sounds and cannot be simply done by you in your living room or at a brick in mortar scanning mill. Instead, this should be performed by a trained professional that understands head and neck anatomy, and orthodontic movement, and can properly diagnose and treat teeth and gum disease prior to getting aligners.
